Bhutta and Saeed started business in 2014. The main office of the firm is in Lahore and there is an affiliate office in Islamabad. The firm also has representation in Peshawar, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad and Karachi. It is a full-service firm which provides legal services in Civil Litigation, Competition Law, Property law and Family law, and Commercial and transactional work. The firm has seen a significant increase in its business with startups. Historically the expertise of the firm has been in criminal law (both hardcore and white-collar crimes). Moreover, the firm is involved in policy work, preparation of training manuals (e.gi for UNDP) and training of judges and advocates at AGHS.
Bhutta and Saeed is a small-sized firm with 6 lawyers. There are two partners who are equal in the hierarchy. The hierarchy among the associates is ‘Senior Associate’ and ‘Junior Associate’. There are no separate Accounts and Human resources departments. The partners handle Accounts and Human Resource tasks.
Internship:The firm offers summer internships during July and August. The hiring is done by approaching students from Law schools. There is no defined stipend for the internship program, but the firm compensates for the travelling expenses of the interns. The interns are required to do research and accompany lawyers to the courts.
Associate:The hiring of associates is done mostly through word of mouth and by approaching Law schools (mostly LUMS). Associates are paid a monthly salary of 30,000 PKR. The firm offers performance-based bonuses that can go up to 3 to 4 times the salary of the associate. Associates receive an annual bonus equal to their one-month salary. Moreover, there is an annual salary increment. For a first-year associate, the increment is 10-20% of their salary. After the associate has spent 3 to 4 years in the firm their salary can be increased by 50 to 60% in annual increment depending on their performance. Currently, there has been no incident where an associate brought business to the firm, but the firm has a policy of a 30% cut in case an associate does. There is no partnership track at the firm.
