Ijaz & Ijaz is primarily a litigation firm working in Pakistan since 2002. Their head office is located in Lahore and they work through collaborations in Karachi and Islamabad and represent clients all over Pakistan. The firm undertakes diverse work that includes taxation, hardcore criminal, constitutional and writ jurisdiction work. They represent client bringing disputes against Pakistan Cricket Board. Ijaz & Ijaz is a medium sized firm with fifteen lawyers including four partners in their team. There is no hierarchy among the partners. The hierarchy among associates is “intern/Junior Associate” and “Associates/Senior Associate”. There is no formal Human Resources or Finance department.
Hiring procedure is same for Interns and Associates. Vacancies are advertised through word-of-mouth. Candidates are hired through evaluation of their CVs and interviews.
Internship: The firm is open to hire interns all-year-long, however, candidates usually join in summers. An internship can be one month long but if an intern completes a three months long internship, it gives the firm the opportunity to assess their work properly and consider them for future employment. Internships are usually unpaid. The interns are expected to be involved in all kinds of work that associates are working on. There is special focus on court visits.
Associate: Candidates are hired as an Intern/Junior Associate position for six months. Expected salary for LUMS graduates is PKR 30,000 per month which is subject to revision every year. After successful completion of the six months period candidates become Associates/Senior Associates. There is no further hierarchy among the associates. The annual increase in salary can be PKR 10,000 per month or more and is completely based on performance. The firm offers almost 30% share as a finder’s fee for bringing business to the firm. The firm offers a track to salaried partnership. There is no expected timeline for partnership and an associate is assessed for the position based on their competence, hard work and ability to bring business to the firm.
