Khosa & Rizvi was founded more than ten years ago. The office of the firm is located in Lahore. However, the firm liaises with colleagues (mostly individual lawyers and one firm) in Islamabad, Karachi, Multan and Bahawalpur on a case-to-case basis. There are three departments at the firm that deal with different cases which are as follows.
Khosa & Rizvi is a small-sized firm. There are 9-10 lawyers, (including partners) working at the firm. There is an informal Human Resource department that includes one senior associate, one founding partner and one person from the managerial staff. The accounts department, a two-member team, handles firm’s accounts with assistance from the tax consultant of the firm. The hierarchy at the firm is as follows:
Summer Internship:The firm offers two to three rounds of one-month-long internships during summers. Only two interns are hired in each round. These internships are unpaid. The primary responsibilities of interns include research work and preparing fact sheets for the ongoing cases. The interns are given the opportunity to study/work on ongoing cases of the firm to enhance their learning. The firm contacts colleagues, relatives/friends and Law schools for hiring interns.
Junior Associate:The hirings at firm open only on a need basis. Similar to the internships’ hiring procedure, the firm circulates information about vacancies among colleagues, friends and prestigious law schools. The firm also considers job applications from the candidates who approach them after observing its lawyers in courts. The hiring process includes one or two interviews with the founding partner, one senior associate and the admin incharge. The shortlisted candidate is hired on one month of probation. Based on their performance during the probation period, the candidate is offered a ‘Junior Associate’ position at the firm.
The salary of a junior associate ranges from 15,000 to 35,000 PKR. Senior associates receive salaries between 35,000 to 45,000 PKR. Junior Associates may receive occasional bonuses based on their performance. Senior associates are eligible for a 15% to 50% share of the fee on every transaction that is assigned to them. The firm does not use the word 'commission' for this percentage share. Instead, they define it as 'Professional Fee'. This percentage is decided based on the hours/minutes and the value they add to the transaction. On average, a senior associate can make up to 80,000 to 100,000 PKR per month, in addition to their basic salary. There is no defined promotion mechanism since there are only two hierarchies (Junior and Senior) in the associates. The only way for an associate to measure their progress is through the level of responsibility and number of transactions assigned to them.
Currently, there is one alumni (Batch of 2022) working at the firm who was recently hired at a salary of 15,000PKR.
